The Sidecar Revival meeting is an unmissable weekend, where we get to see both the British Championship and the FSRA F2 championship as well as the Bemsee club sidecars and classics in the Camathias Cup.  In the programme we had our own race, but due to low numbers in the BEARS class, they were added to our races.

Saturday 3rd august

As last year, qualifying was marred by rain starting just before the outfits assembled in the collecting area.  Most crews did not have time to change wheels, and the qualifying times reflected this, with Gary Fairhurst and Billy Andrews heading the leaderboard on the Kawasaki ZXR9R F1 at a lap time nearly 30 seconds slower than their best race result!  Wesley Pettman and Peter Moss had changed to wets, getting out a little late.  Most stayed out for three laps but by the end of the session only two guest outfits and Pettman/Moss were still on track.

By the time the first race was due, the rain had passed.  Fairhurst/Andrews led from the start, with three guest teams following closely, then the Yamaha F1 of Mark Burns and Jack Fairhurst.  The commentator felt that Gilroy and Oldroyd should be the name of a firm of solicitors, but nevertheless Redd and Taylor led the F2 class from beginning to end.  Dave Tibbles and Raitch Greenwood were going well in third place in the F1s, but could not quite hold off Geoff and Sam Knight, second in the F2s, who passed on the third lap.  Derek Salleh and Zac Andrews had failed to qualify and bad luck continued all weekend, with the first of three DNFs coming on the third lap.  Pettman/Moss failed to complete a lap.  Steve Woolcott and Tom Saville made a good start and maintained their third place in the F2 class throughout the race.  Behind them guests Sarah Bannister with Tony Porter led F1 crew Ciaran McVey and Bryn Rooney on their Derbyshire Suzuki for a couple of laps, with F2s David Williams and Cameron Parry and Jim Noble and Abi Caiger close behind.  McVey/Rooney worked hard and by the last lap had passed the F2s and missed out on an F1 trophy by less than 2 seconds!  Williams/Parry passed Bannister/Porter on the fifth lap but could not get close to Woolcott/Saville, finishing 16 seconds behind them.  Janet Tyrrell and Joanne Thomas had an uneventful race to finish fifth in the F2s.

Ignoring the guests in the second race of the day, Fairhurst/Andrews led the F1 class from the start, with Burns/Fairhurst unable to match them; Tibbles/Greenwood on their Suzuki Bandit finished third F1 with Pettman/Moss the last finisher in fourth place.  George McMahon and Mick Ranson who had not started the first race, only managed one lap with fuel issues, as did Gilroy/Oldroyd, while the unlucky Salleh/Fairhurst again did two full laps, as did the Knights. Both passengers Sam Knight and Taylor Oldroyd losing their grip and visiting the Cadwell grass, nether were hurt.  With only two F2 finishers Noble/Caiger led Tyrrell/Thomas home.

sunday 4th august

Sunday’s first race saw Gilroy/Oldroyd with a slow start but by the second lap were leading the F2s, just behind the first and second F1 outfits of Fairhurst/Andrews and Burns/Fairhurst. McVey/Rooney overtook Salleh/Andrews, only to retire on lap 4 after Bryn Rooney’s Cadwell vegetation visit, then Noble/Caiger also overtook, denying Salleh/Andrews second place in the F2 class.  The Knights followed to take fourth place, overtaking guests Bannister/Porter with a move at Coppice on the last lap, with Woolcott/Saville fifth ahead of Williams/Parry.  Taking third in the F1 class, McMahon/Ranson finished well ahead of fourth placed Pettman/Moss.  A gearbox seizure denied the usually reliable crew of Tyrrell/Thomas a finish, while the gear lever broke for Tibbles/Greenwood.

As the afternoon drew nearer to evening, the last race of the weekend saw a rather depleted field.  Burns/Fairhurst got a good start ahead of Noble/Caiger and Fairhurst/Andrews, but normal places were resumed by the second lap with Fairhurst/Andrews leading Burns/Fairhurst, which continued for six laps, when Gilroy/Oldroyd made an F2 filling of the F1 sandwich.  Third placed F1 McVey/Rooney took nearly all race to pass Noble/Caiger who had a huge lead over third F2, Woolcott/Saville. Tibbles/Greenwood were the last finisher with fourth F1 place.
