Round Three - Anglesey 25th & 26th June
Words - Dave Tibbles / Images - Haydn Wyatt
Mixed fortunes in weather and machine reliability were the prospects for the thirteen teams entering this third round. Joining us were series debutants Alan Warden / Ross Jackson (R6 Yamaha) from Scotland.
Saturday saw warm sunny conditions, while on Sunday, race one started in light rain with most teams running slick tyres, but race two Sunday was held in heavy rain. It was good to see two old championship teams returning - Alan Longshaw / Alan Longbottom (350 Banshee Yamaha) and brothers Tony / Neil Wheatley (Ireson TZ750).
Saturday Race 1
Rob Fisher / Rick Long (600 Baker Yamaha) were back on top form taking the win. Anglesey first timers, father and son Bruce / Ashley Moore (600 Ireson R6) were second. Third place also went the way of circuit newcomers Warden / Jackman.
Dave Tibbles / Mark Edwards (Yamaha FJ 1200) claimed fourth just in front of Pat Gallagher / Mark Maier (Derbyshire GSX1100). The long wheel based Suzuki 1100 of yet another pairing new to the circuit, Mark Burns / Steven Winfrow were sixth; while the all-lady pairing of Marianne Walford / Kerry Hughes (600 Baker) finished seventh; with newcomers to our sport, the father and son team Gerald / Daniel Hodgson (600 Shelbourne) eighth.
Saturday Race 2
The first four finishers finished as per race one, but Gordon Jones / Smudge Taylor sorted their TZ350 Yamaha after practice problems to claim fifth. Burns managed to get in front of Walford but after a DNF in race one, newcomers Ian Sutcliffe / Robert Bryant (600 Jacobs Yamaha) took eighth, with the Hodgson family ninth.
Sunday Race 1
Pat Gallagher’s team did an extra shift and changed his engine overnight which paid off, seeing the big GSX returning to the grid. The first three were unchanged: Fisher / Long - Moore / Moore - Warden / Jackman. Gallagher / Maier were fourth relegating Tibbles / Edwards to fifth. The 350 of Jones / Taylor being the sole two-stroke finisher in sixth. The novice team of Sutcliffe / Bryant had their best race so far taking seventh, in front this time of Burns / Winfrow. The Hodgson’s race ended with a spin off at Rocket corner in the wet.
Sunday Race 2
All machines were on wet tyres - reliability had by now taken a toll, with eight out of the original thirteen outfits taking part. Fisher / Long made it a clean sweep of four wins for the weekend, and the Moore family with four runners up placings. Tibbles / Edwards were able to snatch third from Warden / Jackman who took fourth. The ladies were fifth whilst the Hodgson's finished their first wet race to get a licence upgrade signature.
The next round of the championship is on the 9th & 10th July At Croft.
